The disability support system in Australia is undergoing significant change, especially with the recent passing of the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Getting the NDIS Back on Track No.1). Within the new regime Foundational Supports will support people with disability outside the NDIS, as well as their families and carers.
ECCV recently made a submission to the federal Department of Social Services to inform the design of the new Foundational Supports. The submission addressed three main areas of importance to support people with disability, uphold their human rights, and enable them to live fulfilling lives of their choosing:
- Information, advice and referrals – accessible to people with disability and their families and carers, and the raising of awareness about disability in culturally diverse communities.
- Capacity building – including empowerment of people with disability, and information and training for carers.
- Sector and workforce development – including training in cultural competency for disability service providers, increasing bicultural workers, and providing longer-term block funding to smaller trusted ethno-specific and multicultural organisations.
