ECCV warns that public understanding about many benefits of skilled migration has been undermined by ‘’opportunism by some political actors’’.

The warning is contained in ECCV’s submission to Federal Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Migration which is conducting an inquiry into the value of skilled migration to Australia.

We have called for a renewed focus on proactive communications and campaigns about why skilled migration is essential, where skilled migrants are contributing across the economy and how migration settings are coordinated with housing infrastructure and settlement planning.

ECCV’s also calls for ‘’unambiguous statements from political leaders and public officials’’ to utilise the plethora of evidence to counter harmful and uninformed narratives.

ECCV’s submission sets out how skilled migration is essential to Australia’s long-term prosperity and cites data from the recent Australian Multicultural Framework Review showing that ‘skilled migrants add a staggering $198,000 per person to the fiscal position of Australian governments over their lifetime’.

Skilled migrants make a critical contribution to key sectors including healthcare, aged care, construction, education, and technology. These contributions are particularly vital in the context of an ageing population, infrastructure growth, and rising demand for essential services. Beyond their economic value, skilled migrants strengthen Australia’s social cohesion, civic participation, and cultural diversity.

In regional areas, ECCV also highlights the critical role skilled migration plays in supporting local economies and essential services.
