As an advocate for social justice and human rights, ECCV promotes the rights of community members who are the most marginalised and face the greatest barriers to social participation.

ECCV has contributed to the recent community consultation about the Victorian LGBTIQ+ Strategy Directions Paper, which will guide the Victorian Government’s efforts to achieve equality for LGBTIQ+ communities over the next decade.

The LGBTIQ+ Strategy Directions Paper proposes a vision for LGBTIQ+ equality in Victoria and also identifies four high priority areas for change in systems, policies and services.

ECCV’s response to Directions Paper includes recommendations on how to better support LGBTIQA+ people of CALD background.

ECCV has also recently raised concerns with the Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQ+ Communities, Ro Allen, about confusion and potential misunderstanding of the recently passed Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Bill 2020, among migrant and refugee communities and faith groups.

The legislation is an important and historic step towards ending harmful practices that attack the identities of LGBTQA+ people and cause ongoing distress and mental health issues. It is essential to ensure clear understanding of this legislation across the community so that all LGBTQA+ people are safe from harmful conversion practices.
