ECCV statement on the Israel-Hamas conflict

Oct 9, 2023

The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria (ECCV) is deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

We strongly condemn the indiscriminate and abhorrent attacks carried out by Hamas on Israel.

Our hearts go out to all those affected by the violence in Israel and Palestine, and we urgently call for an immediate cessation of hostilities by both sides.

We urge all parties involved to exercise the utmost restraint and work towards a comprehensive, enduring peaceful resolution, ensuring the safety of all civilians in both countries.

It is imperative that all hostages are safely returned, and the region can find a path back to peace and stability.

The situation highlights the importance of a two-state solution as a framework for sustainable peace. Such a solution allows for the coexistence of both Israel and Palestine as sovereign states, living side-by-side in peace and security.

We want to acknowledge that these international events are deeply troubling for our local communities who have family and loved ones in both Israel and Palestine.

The events should not undermine the social cohesion and harmony that define Victoria’s multicultural communities.

Victoria is a state where our diversity is celebrated as our greatest strength. In these trying times, it is essential that we continue to uphold our values of inclusivity, respect, and unity.

We are immensely grateful to live in a nation like Australia, where people from diverse backgrounds coexist harmoniously, enriching our society.

ECCV has actively engaged with leaders from both the Jewish and Islamic communities in Victoria.

We reiterate our unwavering commitment to fostering dialogue and partnership during these challenging times, with the aim of promoting peace, empathy, and mutual respect.
