ECCV strongly supports Victorian Government’s newly launched multicultural policy statement

The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria (ECCV) has come out in strong support of the Victorian Government’s multicultural policy statement that was launched on Sunday 19 February.

ECCV Chairperson, Eddie Micallef, said ECCV congratulated and applauded the Andrews’ Government on the release of the “Victorian. And proud of it.” campaign, that focuses on belonging and employment.

“Victoria is a leader in multiculturalism and it’s great to see a strong policy that respects and encourages people of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds,” Mr Micallef said.

“ECCV agrees that it is time for all people to come together and have robust intercultural dialogues about what binds us rather than what divides us.

“Victorian. And proud of it - is based on five multicultural values statements: One law for all; Discrimination is never acceptable; Everyone is free to be themselves; A fair go for all; It’s up to all of us to play our part for a Victoria we can be proud of – and these are all core values ECCV supports,” Mr Micallef said.

ECCV is pleased to see the new Victorian multicultural policy statement building on the issues we raised at our recent State Conference on The Next Generation of Multicultural Victoria about respect and the right of all people to belong.

“The role of the earlier waves of migrants is important in contributing to Victoria’s values, and these migrants have made an invaluable and ongoing contribution to our vibrant multicultural society.

“It’s important to remember that Victorians from culturally diverse backgrounds develop a strong sense of belonging through the expression of their heritage, language and culture as well as through connecting with other Victorians

“The Government is also to be commended for implementing a television and print campaign with stories of real Victorians from culturally diverse backgrounds which highlight how each of them is a Victorian and proud of it.

“Through the Victorian. And Proud of it campaign Premier Andrews announced $15million to assist new arrivals to learn English and find a job; and $4 million for a Multicultural Sports Fund, which are valuable initiatives that will promote inclusiveness in our society.”
